Chelsea manager Frank Lampard hailed Jorginho’s response to critics and revealed the Italian is a “leader” in the team.
After linking up with old Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea last year, Jorginho struggled to win critics over during his debut campaign.
The Brazilian-bord midfielder struggled to adapt to the demands of English football despite making 54 appearances. However, he did end the campaign on a high by helping Chelsea win the Europa League and secure a third-place Premier League finish.
While Sarri’s summer departure for Juventus had prompted doubts over Jorginho’s future, Lampard has continued to rely on him.
The 27-year-old has started all four of Chelsea’s games this season and starred in last weekend’s 3-2 win at Norwich City. Blues supporters, in fact, sang his name during the league match at Carrow Road.
“From watching Chelsea closely last year, I thought he finished the season brilliantly,” said Lampard, according to The Guardian.
“If you’re going through a tough time with the fans, it is really easy to hide, but he never hid from receiving the ball on the edge of his own box or a tight area.
“That’s a sign of character – you need to believe in yourself, stand up and play. That’s what he does. When Jorginho goes on the pitch he wants to win and contribute.”
The Blues legend also talked up Jorginho’s leadership qualities and praised his attitude.
“He’s been a pleasure to work with,” continued Lampard.
“Fans are generally pretty honest. What they’re seeing is a player – I don’t want to talk about last year – who has a drive and determination as a team player. He also has quality. He can change a game, lead a game, own a game from midfield areas.
“I see day to day what playing for this club means. He’s just a fantastic sportsman who cares deeply. When you have a training session that might fall below standard, or drop even for a moment, he’s the one who drives it up again.
“When the fans see that on the pitch, as they did at Norwich, that’s why they sing his name. All I see now is a really good player who is a leader in the group.”
Jorginho will hope to continue his good form in Chelsea’s Premier League game against Sheffield United on Saturday.
The fixture will take place at Stamford Bridge, with kick-off set for 16:00 (CET).
