French World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf has labelled Luis Suarez a “cheat” and was glad to see Liverpool knock him and Barcelona out of the Champions League.
Despite trailing 3-0 on aggregate, Liverpool thrashed Barcelona 4-0 in the return leg of their semi-final tie following braces from Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldum. While the visitors’ star forwards Lionel Messi and Suarez were kept subdued.
The latter’s return to his old club was a forgettable one as he received a hostile reception at Anfield. Suarez also got himself involved in a fight with Liverpool’s Andy Robertson.
After reportedly having a heated brawl in the Camp Nou tunnel during the first leg, Suarez aimed a couple of cynical kicks at Robertson during the return leg. It meant the Scottish full-back was forced to leave at half-time with a calf injury.
But Suarez’s actions, in fact, had the opposite effect as Robertson’s replacement was Wijnaldum, who scored twice for Liverpool.
The Reds have now reached the Champions League final for the second season in a row.
“I am a fan of Barcelona, but I was glad to see them eliminated on Tuesday because of Luis Suarez. I have no respect for a footballer like him,” Leboeuf told RMC Sport.
“He’s a cheat and I hate the way he plays. If I had faced him, I would have done everything I could to get him off the pitch.
“What he did to Ghana at the World Cup, the two times he bit opponents. He’s a bad example for young people.”
Suarez is sidelined with a knee injury and has been ruled out of the remainder of Barcelona’s season.
The 32-year-old forward underwent surgery this week and now faces a race against time to be fit for Uruguay’s Copa America campaign next month.
