Manchester United midfielder Fred describes the events that transpired at the Etihad Stadium as “sad.”
The Manchester United and Brazil midfielder approached the corner flag to take a corner kick.
At this point, a moment of madness apparently took over the City fans in that corner of the Etihad Stadium.
A barrage of lighters, coins and even a water bottle pelted down on the United player and his assisting teammate Jesse Lingard.
It also transpired that racial abuse from an individual who has disgusted the footballing world was allegedly directed towards the players too.
The United man Fred, however, has spoken out on such behavior, and in an interview with ESPN Brazil, he is saddened that such things still go on in football.
“Unfortunately we are still in a backward society.”
“It’s a shame we still have to live with that in 2019.”
“Unfortunately, this is happening in some stadiums.”
“It happened here, it happened in Ukraine with some friends.”
” It’s sad, but we have to keep our heads up and forget about that.”
“We can’t give them any attention because that’s all they want.”
” I spoke to the referee after the match, they will do something about it and that’s all.
“I don’t want to think about it. I just want to move on.”
A man has actually been identified and arrested.
