French Ligue 1 Team of the Week (Match day 2)

With the French Ligue 1 now in its second week, many players have really risen to the occasion and could be the defining elements for their respective sides.

French Ligue 1 match-day 2 saw Olympique Lyonnais add another comprehensive win to their belt while Stade Rennais showed PSG what it means to be a bogey team.

Here we look at players who stood out this weekend.

Steven Mandanda (Marseille)

While Les Phoceens are going to be in for a tough time in the Ligue 1 this season, Mandanda is going to be very decisive. The veteran’s performance against Nantes ensured that Marseille did not come away from the game empty-handed.

Hamari Traore (Rennais)

The right-sided defender showcased how to defend against Kylian Mbappe. The youngster was able to keep the Frenchman at bay and also provided the decisive pass for the Niang equalizer.

Jason Denayer (Lyon)

The Lyon captain was very authoritative in the 6-0 thrashing of Angers. Intelligent in his placement, the youngster played a crucial role in the build-up to the fourth goal. Clean and professional throughout the 90 minutes.

Stoppila Sunzu (Metz)

The Metz central defender ensured that AS Monaco didn’t have enough room to breathe with impeccable defending throughout the match. He won most of his duels and was involved in the penalty incident that started the 3-0 route.

Florian Miguel (Nimes)

Despite seeing his team lose to Nice, the left-sided midfielder was assured in his responsibilities and should be entering match-day 3 with his head held high.

Eduardo Camavinga (Stade Rennais)

He might be only 16 but the midfield prodigy is showing why he is the future of French football. Put up against a team as strong as PSG, the youngster wasn’t daunted by the task at hand. He was very good in recovering the ball.

Even though the capital club put a lot of pressure on him, the teenager was very confident with the ball at his feet and played as if he has been doing this for a decade. Clearly this youngster is going to go far in his career.

Lucas Tousart (Lyon)

The French midfielder was full of energy throughout the game and played a crucial role in at least three out of six goals scored by the Ligue 1 leaders. While he isn’t a common name in Europe, the youngster is going to be an important part of Les Gones this season as the club looks to finally lift a Ligue 1 title.

Memphis Depay (Lyon)

Another Lyon player makes the list after another great performance. He scored the third goal in the 6-0 rout of Angers and added another one in the second half. With two goals and one assist, the Dutchman deserves his place in the list.

Moussa Dembele (Lyon)

Hotly linked with a move to Manchester United, the Frenchman decided to stay in Ligue 1 and scored two goals.

Habib Diallo (Metz)

The striker now has three goals in two Ligue 1 games and caused Monaco all sorts of problems.

Player of the day

Houssem Aouar

The young midfielder is an extraordinary talent. He scored a really good goal and then provided the decisive pass for Depay’s first of the night. Technically sound and a leader on the pitch, the youngster is going to become a big star in the future.
