Ajax have qualified for their first Champions League semi-finals since 1997, so let’s talk about one of the players who played a vital role in their success – the 21-year old Frenkie de Jong.

Frenkie de Jong is one of the most exciting talents in football, who currently plays as a midfielder for AFC Ajax. The youngster has agreed on a €75 million worth transfer to Barcelona last January and will move to Camp Nou at the start of the 2019-20 season.

The Dutchman started his career at Eredivisie side Willem II in 2015 where he learned his trade to become a professional footballer, going through the ranks of their youth academy.

He moved to Amsterdam at the age of 18 and played 46 games for Jong Ajax – the second team of AFC Ajax, winning the Eerste Divisie Talent Of The Season award in 2017.

De Jong established himself as one of the hottest prospects in Europe during the 2017-18 season. He is a technically gifted footballer, who has fantastic ball control and out-of-this-world dribbling ability.

His one of a kind skillset allows him to adapt to different positions on the football pitch. The youngster primarily plays as a deep-lying playmaker, but he can also play as a defensive midfielder, central defender, or even adopt a more offensive role and play as an all-around central midfielder.

One of the main reasons why Barcelona decided to invest in the 21-year old Dutchman is his passing range and his football intelligence. De Jong possesses an amazing ability to read the game, which helps him to control the midfield of the pitch and create attacking opportunities for his teammates.

The midfielder made his senior debut for the Netherlands national team in a friendly game against Peru last September. He is a regular first-team player since then and played a pivotal role as Holland advanced to the finals of the UEFA Nations League, winning their group ahead of World Champions France and Germany.

De Jong is not only one of the best youngsters is football, but he is one of the best players overall for the 2018-19 season.

His excellent performances in the Champions League helped Ajax get past defending champions Real Madrid and Serie A giants Juventus, reaching the semi-finals of the competition for the first time since 1997.

The Jews have also reached the KNVB Cup Final and are chasing their first Eredivisie title in five years, as they sit on the top of the league table.

Frenkie de Jong will have the chance to win a historic Treble with AFC Ajax this season, before starting a new chapter in his career at one of the biggest football clubs in the worlds – FC Barcelona.
