Frenkie de Jong has comfortably won the UEFA Midfielder of the Season after inspiring Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals.

De Jong’s visionary and dribbling skills captured everybody’s interest last season as he helped lead Ajax to a historical run in the Champions League. It saw the club overcome the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus in impressive fashion to make their first semi-final appearance since 1997.

This helped establish De Jong as one of Europe’s most renown central midfielders. In fact, former players, scouts and pundits alike have even compared his style of play to none other than Barcelona icon Andres Iniesta himself.

That could be a possible reason why the Blaugrana forked out an incredible €75m to sign the talented 22-year-old.

While De Jong ultimately couldn’t lead Ajax or the Netherlands to European glory in the end, big things are expected of him in the near future.

And it appears that club coaches and journalists agree having voted him as the UEFA Midfielder of the Season by a landside.

UEFA announced that the Holland international finished an incredible 162 points ahead of his nearest challenger Christian Eriksen of Tottenham. Meanwhile, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson rounded-off the top-three.

De Jong’s Holland team-mate Virgil van Dijk, on the other hand, won the UEFA Player and defender of the Year.
