Former Inter Milan player and Galatasaray and Turkish football legend Hakan Sukur has had his life destroyed by political turmoil in his home country.

The one time darling of Turkish football Hakan Sukur has fled his homeland and lost absolutely everything. According to the retried player, it’s all because of his political stand.

Sukur enjoyed a glamorous and successful career at Turkish giants Galatasaray. He is probably Turkey’s most famous export, enjoying spells at Inter Milan and Blackburn Rovers.

After his career in football was over he went into the field of politics. But a difference of opinion with the country’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan led to his new career coming to an abrupt end.

It also had a huge impact on his life and things have never been the same since.

In an interview with German outlet Welt am Sonntag he reveals how he was targeted and had no choice but to flee.

He said:

“Stones were thrown at my wife’s boutique, my children were harassed on the street.”

“I received threats after every statement I made.”

“When I had left, they locked up my father – and everything I owned was confiscated.”

“I have nothing left anywhere in the world.”

“Erdogan took everything from me. My right to freedom, the right to explain to me, to express me, the right to work.”

He fled to the USA, where he has tried his hand at various careers.

He added:

“I ran a cafe here [in California] for a while.”

“Now I drive a taxi [Uber].”

Sukur insists he is a patriot but the government considers him otherwise.

He concluded:

“. They just say ‘traitor’ and ‘terrorist’.”

“I am an enemy of the government; not an enemy of the state, the Turkish nation. I love our flag, our country.”
