Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa has rediscovered his form with Santos and looking at his time with Inter, he has no idea what went wrong and reveals that fans want him to come back.
Inter Milan signed Gabigol for €29.5m from Santos in 2016, but he struggled in Italian football as he managed to score just one Serie A goal.
He joined Benfica on loan but didn’t do much better there. The loan spell was cut short and Gabigol decided to return to Santos, where he found his form again.
“I really liked the fans in Italy and my teammates were always very kind too. Even now on social media, fans keep asking me to return,” Gabigol told Brazilian media Tribuna, via Football Italia.
“It’s hard to say what didn’t work. Perhaps at that moment, the team needed something different to what I could give. I played very little and only scored one goal.”
He spoke his former manager Frank de Boer, who criticised him for lack of effort in training.
“I respect De Boer a great deal and he was always kind to me. I think he was just letting off steam, or perhaps the message came through distorted here in Brazil. He knows more than me, so if he said those things, it means I have to improve and I consider it constructive criticism.”
