Gattuso refuses to dwell on upcoming Milan derby

Gennaro Gattuso’s sole concern lies with preparing AC Milan for their next two Serie A games rather than dwelling in their upcoming derby with Inter Milan.

Five wins in their last seven league fixtures have enabled Milan to climb into the top-four of the Serie A table with third-place Inter only two points above them.

Therefore, the upcoming Milan derby on March 17 at the San Siro will carry a great significance for both teams with fifth-placed AS Roma a point behind Milan and so in a position to capitalise on the outcome at the San Siro.

But, for Gattuso, the focus lies with Milan’s next two league games with the first one coming up on Saturday at home to Sassuolo.

“Before the Inter match, there are two vital games to play against Sassuolo and Chievo. We must focus on these matches, then we’ll think about the Derby,” said Gattuso on the club website.

“We worked long and hard over the summer and the results are there to be seen in our physical endurance. We now have 14 finals left to play, and we’ll prepare for them in the best possible fashion.”

The Rossoneri boss is wary of the threat that Sassuolo will provide them this weekend, despite the fact they’ve only won three of their last 19 Serie A fixtures.

“I know Roberto De Zerbi well,” said Gattuso.

“I picked up only one point against his Benevento side last season. Sassuolo have good players and they play De Zerbi’s style of football.

“We must show them respect, particularly after the past week during which we’ve worked hard. The main thing is to maintain consistency both in defence and in our general play.”

Meanwhile, Spanish playmaker Suso will likely return to the line-up after serving a ban in place of Samu Castillejo.

Although former Juventus centre-back Mattia Caldara and Giacomo Bonaventura will both remained sidelined with injuries.
