Gennaro Gattuso was a midfield workhorse during his playing days and is making impact from the bench, barking orders to rejuvenate Napoli’s straggling season.

Many expected Napoli would challenge Juventus for Serie A honors. Entering the final stretch of the season, the Partenopei are no where near. Europa League qualification next year would be their saving grace.

The Blues started brilliantly but lost their way under Carlo Ancelotti. A run of draws and low scoring fixtures put pressure on Napoli.

Ancelotti would ultimately lose his job as he could not change their fortunes. Former player, Gennaro Gattuso, was brought in to take charge and steady the ship.

Gattuso has done exactly that and Napoli are seventh in Serie A standings. His efforts at San Paolo are not disregarded and even praised by opposition coaches.

Napoli take on Sassuolo in their Italian top flight fixture, and their coach, Roberto De Zerbi, was full of praise for the former Italy international.

Napoli and Sassuolo are next to each other in the Serie A table with six points separating them.

De Zerbi hailed Gattuso for his man management skills and believes it has been the driving factor at San Paolo.

“He is very good at recharging and motivating the team,” De Zerbi said at a press conference[via football italia]. “He did an extraordinary job.

“He won the Coppa Italia, drew with Barcelona and revitalized Napoli. The esteem he has for me, is the same I feel for him.”
