Gelson Martins was officially presented as an Atletico Madrid player for the first time at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano and he revealed that great influence Diego Simeone in his decision to join the club

The Portugal international arrives from Sporting Lisbon after a prolonged battle between the Primeira Liga side and Atletico that nearly saw the transfer agreement being taken to the courts, despite the fact that Martins had terminated his contract.

But Atletico announced last week that Martins has now officially become their player and the 23-year-old was presented to the supporters today and just an hour before his new teammates were scheduled to arrive back from Singapore.

“We sign a footballer who, despite his youth, already has a great deal of experience,” said the club president Enrique Cerezo, as stated on Marca.

“Here Portuguese players have become legends and we are sure that you will give everything for these colours.”

“I am very happy to be at Atletico and I’m here to do my job: play football and contribute to the team.

“I’m going to add hard work and will help Atletico win match by match.”

Martins revealed the impact his new boss Simeone had in convincing to join Los Rojiblancos this summer.

“The coach’s message was very important to me and he said I could add value to the team,” Martins continued.

“All the players are very good, but the coach thinks I have special characteristics and that’s why I came.”

“Since I arrived, I have worked very hard and with quality, and that will help me in the way I play, which is why I am very happy to work with Simeone.”

“I have already felt the atmosphere that is here and that weighed on my decision,” he added.

“I hope to succeed in this stadium.”

Martins was part of the Portugal squad at the World Cup, but only made one substitute appearance after an impressive season at Sporting, that saw him score eight goals and add a further eight assists in 31 appearances as they secured a third-place finish in the Primeira Liga.
