Gerard Pique has shut down rumours over an alleged fallout between Barcelona captain Lionel Messi and his new strike partner Antoine Griezmann.
Since swapping Atletico Madrid to join Pique at Barcelona in the summer, Griezmann has struggled to strike up a rapport with Messi. It’s already sparked concern over the Frenchman’s Camp Nou future.
Apparently, the pair don’t see eye-to-eye with rumours floating about claiming Messi “ignores” Griezmann on the pitch.
This could possibly be down to his disappointment over Barcelona’s failure to re-sign his good friend Neymar. The €120m they used to sign Griezmann would certainly have bolstered their attempts to sway Paris Saint-Germain into a sale.
But Pique insists that things are good between Messi and Griezmann contrary to whatever rumours are going about.
“Here, we magnify everything very much,” the defender told El Larguero.
“Leo and Grizi get along, the same as Leo and [Ousmane] Dembele get along, or Leo with Pedro or [David] Villa.
“It’s good. With Luis [Suarez], they are almost like brothers.
“Just because he doesn’t get along [with Griezmann] like he does with Luis doesn’t mean they get along badly.”
Griezmann recently stated himself this month that his partnership with Messi and Suarez is improving after a difficult start.
The World Cup winner has only managed four goals and three assists in 12 appearances across all competitions for Barcelona. However, he will have a chance to improve on that tally for Saturday’s visit to Levante UD in La Liga.
Ernesto Valverde’s side will likely go all-out in Valencia in an attempt to hold on to their slender one-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.
Pique, meanwhile, also revealed how the entire Barcelona squad offered to change their salaries to help seal Neymar’s return over the summer.
