Legendary striker, Gianfranco Zola has said an emotional goodbye to Chelsea as he leaves the club following the arrival of Frank Lampard.
The appointment of Frank Lampard had spelled the end of Gianfranco Zola and what pieces remained from last season. The Italian served as the club’s assistant manager under Maurizio Sarri.
However, things started becoming more clear once it transpired that Frank Lampard would be appointed as the club’s next manager. And while Gianfranco Zola enjoys a cult status at the club, he was never going to be considered as part of the club’s coaching staff for next season.
Although he played a crucial role in helping Chelsea qualify for the Champions League and win the Europa League in Baku, the club decided to move towards a different direction.
Now, Jody Morris will be the club’s assistant manager and would be helping out Lampard from the dugout from next season.
Although the way his contract was not renewed doesn’t befit a legend of his standing, Zola has no resentment towards the club. In what has always been his trademark, the former Italy international left a classy tribute to the club and its fans.
As reported by The Daily Star, Zola thanked the board for giving him a chance to return to the club once more.
”As I leave Chelsea Football Club, I wish to say thank you to all the fans, players and staff for their incredible support during the past season.
“I would also like to thank the Board for giving me the opportunity to return to Stamford Bridge as part of Maurizio Sarri’s backroom staff.
“Chelsea is so important to me and I am proud to have helped the club win its sixth European title and qualify for next season’s Champions League.
“I wish the new management team and everyone at Chelsea the very best of luck next season and in future.”
