Despite a somewhat inconsistent campaign, Jose Gimenez believes Atletico achieved all their season objectives on the pitch.
Jose Gimenez believes Atletico Madrid proved their critics wrong this season.
An inconsistent spell at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium had many claiming Simeone’s men had fallen from grace.
At a point in time, Atletico were out of the top five and it remained to be seen what would become of their campaign.
Gimenez and company picked form just in time and were able to put all of their critics to bed.
A top-four finish and a Champions League quarter-final berth means Los Rojiblancos have not been all that bad this season. Even more impressive that the Spanish side dumped out holders Liverpool to reach the last eight.
Ahead of their upcoming game against Leipzig in August, Gimenez remains upbeat and insists it has been a good season for Atletico so far.
“We achieved our league objective, which we’d planned at the start of the season, after lots of people didn’t believe in us,” the 25-year-old said to the club’s social media channel.
“We’ve got a great group and we’re very happy at having achieved it.
“The team showed that we’re all here to compete, that we’re doing well and that competing between ourselves is making us grow as a team”
Leipzig are no pushovers in any way and Gimenez expects it to be a difficult game when both sides meet in Portugal next month.
“It will be a very difficult game,” he added.
“There are very tough teams in the quarter-finals.
“We also had a very difficult opponent in the last 16, but we showed what we can do when we compete.”
“Leipzig are a very attacking team, with high full-backs.”
“We have to have the intensity that we often have and focus on what we have to do, which I’m sure we’ll do well.”
Gimenez is attracting interest from Chelsea but no doubt Atletico will refuse all offers for the solid defender
