Olivier Giroud scores the penalty that helped France labor to victory over Moldova 2-1.

France had already secured their place at Euro 2020 after Turkey got the draw against Iceland that saw it impossible for anyone to catch the top two in Group H.

The French are the reigning World Champions of football and looked anything but that in a game that should have been a formality.

The visitors actually took the lead in the ninth minute, stunning the home crowd.

With the exception of Lloris in goal, Hernadez in the defense and Pogba in the midfield, Didier Deschamps fielded a full-strength team.

But the minnows from Moldova gave the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Raphael Varane a run for their money.

It was in fact the big Real Madrid defender Varane that got Les Bleus back on level terms in the 35th minute.

Moldova hung in and kept the game all square until the 79th minute.

Digne was brought down, and up stepped the much-criticized favorite sone of Deschamps, Oliveri Giroud.

Giroud made no mistake, in converting the spot-kick.

France held on and ran out 2-1 winners.

They go top of the group, but still, have to make sure they do better than Turkey in the last game keep the first place.
