Avram Grant believes Bayer Leverkusen will be helpless to stop Blues’ billionaire owner Roman Abramovich snatching Kai Havertz if he wants.
Over the past few weeks, Havertz has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea.
With the Blues securing Champions League football, they intensified their chase on the German starlet. The 21-year-old has proven to be one of the top youngsters in world football since his breakthrough as a teenager.
Havertz completed yet another brilliant season with Leverkusen, scoring 12 goals and supplying six assists in 30 league appearances.
With the Blues still intent on his signature, there are questions asked if the club can indeed complete the transfer. The German international is reportedly valued at around €78million. Chelsea’s recent deals for Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner mean their summer budget would be significantly reduced already.
But ex-Blues boss Avram Grant believes Havertz to Chelsea could be a done deal in no time should Roman Abramovich want him.
Speaking in an interview quoted by Goal, Grant said: “Abramovich didn’t have a problem with money before! When he wants something, he buys it.
“He doesn’t do things to save money. Whether they have more or less money, I don’t think it’s important.
“What I think is important is that they started to use the academy. They spent so much money on it and they didn’t give anyone a chance [before]. My policy at Chelsea was that we wanted one third of the squad as under-21 players, because you cannot invest a lot into the academy and not give them a chance”
“With a good signing they can compete with Liverpool or Man City. [Havertz] has the quality. We need to wait and see [if he’s the one to bridge the gap].”
