Antoine Griezmann believes that only a Frenchman should win the 2018 Ballon d’Or after the national side’s World Cup success
Griezmann, along with France teammates Kylian Mbappe and Raphael Varane, are in the 30-man shortlist for this year’s prize.
On the back of a series of impressive displays for both France and Atletico Madrid last season, Griezmann recently claimed that he should be a serious contender for the award as he is now on par with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
However, no matter what happens, the 27-year-old is adamant that a French World Cup winner must take home the prize in Paris on December 3.
“We are world champions and part of the best team in the world,” Griezmann told France Football. “The best team in the world surely possesses the best player, right?
“In any case, that is how I see it. Apart from that, it is a question of votes, opinions and different judgements. However, I believe that a Frenchman must win the Ballon d’Or.”
Nevertheless, Griezmann is thrilled to be involved in this year’s Ballon d’Or.
“For me, it is a dream,” he said. “Historically speaking, it is for the best of the best. There are only star performers — the winners are examples. It would be a dream to be considered an example to others.”
