French forward Antoine Griezmann expects to win the Ballon d’Or so he can become an integral part of Atletico Madrid’s history as one of its legends.
Atletico Madrid has never had a Ballon d’Or winner in their ranks, which is one of the biggest motivations that Antoine Greizmann has to win the award this year.
The Colchonero forward is adamant that he wants to be that important player for Atletico Madrid, the only one in the Spanish club’s history who can say that he won the Ballon d’Or and remain as such for a long time.
Back in 2016 when Antoine reached the Champions League and European Championship finals, everybody blamed him for failing to score in each of those matches and effectively costing the tournaments to both of his squads.
Even though Griezmann did make it to the podium of every individual award gala that year, he lost all of those awards to Cristiano Ronaldo who won the same competitions that he lost in the same year.
Antoine has that trauma ever since, he never stopped blaming himself for his squad’s failure and this year is different because he did perform in the finals for both France and Atletico.
The French forward opened the doors of his house to Marca, where he discussed the real chances he has to win the prestigious prize this year and how much he yearns to become a living Atletico Madrid legend.

“We’ll see but I’m always grateful that people think about me for this very important trophy, but as I’ve said before, without the collective you can’t aspire to any of these awards,” started Griezmann when asked about the Ballon d’Or.
“It would be a dream and we’ll see what happens. But I’m not the one who votes, otherwise it would be easier. But yes, I first wanted to be that important player in the important moments, especially in the knock-out stages and finals.”
“I wanted to win finals after I lost the previous two I played back in 2016, I always felt that losing those two finals were my fault but I became decisive in the last two I played apart from the European Supercup.”
“This is what I was looking for and what I wanted. My aim right now is to improve every single year as a player, a father, a husband, and a brother. It would be nice that a Frenchman won the Ballon d’Or, if it’s me even better but I will be equally proud as long as a player from my country wins it.”
“As we all know, winning a World Cup is extremely difficult and we had a great performance. I also want to get into Atletico Madrid’s history by winning the Ballon d’Or, it would be a dream and a great reason to be proud if I could win this award as a player for this club,” he concluded.

France Football’s campaign with Griezmann
Despite having Luka Modric as the clear favorite to win the award this year, it’s evident that the French publication France Football is rooting for one of its compatriots.
Griezmann is arguably the top candidate to make it to the podium, but there is a real possibility that Modric beats them all to the punch by the end of the year because he was simply the better footballer.
However, there is a strong case being made by several news outlets in Spain, suggesting that all of France’s news outlets are strongly campaigning to get a Frenchman to win the award this year because they think he deserves it after winning the FIFA World Cup during the summer.
Griezmann tries to stay away from the controversy, but he does express his opinion on the matter when asked and he obviously would love to become the first footballer who ended Ronaldo and Messi’s decade-long dominance in world football.
Becoming the first Ballon d’Or winner after them, would truly be a historic moment for everyone but especially him.
