Guardiola dismisses Man City’s ‘fantasy’ quadruple talk

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola doesn’t have any interest in fantasizing over the prospect of them winning the quadruple this season.

The Citizens are firmly in the hunt for all four pieces of major silverware this season after booking their spot in the next month’s Carabao Cup final by beating Burton 10-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals.

Aside from that, only four points separate City from leaders Liverpool in the Premier League title race and they will meet German side Schalke 04 in the last-16 of the Champions League.

For now, though, Guardiola’s sole focus lies with Saturday’s fourth-round FA Cup tie against Burnley.

“We are able to try to win tomorrow, that’s all I can assure. The other is fantasy,” replied Guardiola on Sky Sports, when asked about winning the quadruple this term.

The Catalan will not be taking Burnley lightly either given their recent run of strong form in the Premier League.

Sean Dyche’s side appear to have turned a corner recently with three wins in their last four league outings enabling them to escape the relegation zone by moving up to 16th-place.

And while conceding that Saturday’s cup game may not be their top priority, Guardiola expects Burnley to give it everything against his City team.

He added: “When I hear that the FA Cup is not top of Burnley’s agenda, does it mean 11 guys are going to play at the Etihad Stadium and don’t want to win?

“Don’t they want to win? I cannot believe it. They are going to try to play. What they did last season in finishing seventh in the league is an incredible achievement for them.

“After maybe not starting well, they have won five or six games in a row. I have a lot of respect for what they have done and what they try to do.

“We always try to play a strong team. It is the FA Cup against a Premier League side like Burnley so we are going to play with the best team we believe can win the game.

“Today, in the big leagues, if you lose points you are not going to win the Premier League, the FA Cup, the big competitions. You have to win every day if you want a chance to the end to win titles.”

The City and Burnley FA Cup game will take place at the Etihad Stadium with kick-off set for 16:00 (CET) on Saturday.
