Marek Hamsik admits Napoli regrets bowing out of the Champions League despite getting close to securing a spot in the round of 16.
The Neapolitans have not been big fans of the Europa League in former campaigns but Hamsik made it clear they want to go as far as possible in the competition.
“We gave everything, but it didn’t work out and we’re sad,” the midfielder told his official website and cited by Football Italia after Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Liverpool.
“My shot at the start of the game? Curses… it was only a few centimeters off-target! We started well, but Liverpool made us suffer.
“In the second half they had several chances, but we also created many chances to score and we didn’t have that little bit of luck.
“We’ve had some great games against big clubs in the Champions League. We played very well, but it wasn’t enough to go through.
“Going out like this hurts, but we have to pick ourselves up and focus on the trip to Cagliari.
“The Europa League will start in the spring and we want to go as far as possible in it.”
