Join us as we take a quick tour of the Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone’s career so far on the occasion of his 50th birthday.
Born on 28 April 1970, Diego Pablo Simeone started his senior career playing for Argentine side Velez Sarsfield. He spent a few more years playing for a handful of other clubs before joining Atletico Madrid in 1997, a club he would later take over as manager and push their footballing boundaries.
El Cholo, as he was nicknamed by a former coach due to his energetic playing style, became the Atletico head coach in 2011. In just his first season, he guided the team to a Europa League title. Simeone also helped Atletico win their first La Liga title in nearly 20 years, ending the duopoly of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Twice has the Los Rojiblancos gone on to play the Champions League final under the 50-year old, a feat they had never achieved ever since the competitions changed its format. Unfortunately, both the times it ended in a defeat to Real Madrid.
As Transfermarkt reports, Diego Simeone is currently the best-paid coach in the world, ahead of the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Pep Guardiola, and Jose Mourinho.
