Today a man that put Nigerian football on the map, Champions League winner Finidi George turns 49, let’s celebrate with him.
Finidi George was one of the original superstars of the Super Eagles.
George played in the Ajax side that won the Champions League in 1995. He was there to help them win three consecutive Eredivisie titles.
All the talk today is about Nigeria’s Odion Ighalo, but much of the tradition of Nigerian football began with George.
He was part of the Nigerian national side that won the African Cup of Nations back in 1994 too.
George started out his career with the Sharks of his native Nigeria, before being scouted by Louis van Gaal and signed by Ajax at the age of 22.
After three years in Amsterdam, which saw him win silverware in every season, he moved on to La Liga.
As with so many of the Dutch giant’s stars he was cashed in on, being sold for an amazing 10 million Euro equivalent back in 1996 to Real Betis.
With the exception of a brief spell with the then Premier League side Ipswich Town in 2001, he played out the remainder of his career in Spain.
George played a total of 347 club games, scoring 73 goals and contributing 29 assists.
For the Super Eagles he turned out 45 times and bagged eight goals.
