Ralph Hasenhuttl guided Southampton to a respectable 11th place finish after their flirtation with relegation at the start of the season.
In ten years, Leicester City fans will forget their long run in top-four places. They will remember the 2019/20 season for their 9-0 drubbing of Southampton.
Southampton fans will not forget that result as well. But they will also remember the remarkable job done by Ralph Hasenhuttl and his staff in ensuring a mid-table result.
The Saints were favorites for relegation after their poor start to the season. Leicester City’s 9-0 drubbing at St Mary’s Stadium solidified that case.
However, the Saints regrouped and since have battled their way to 52 points. Their 11th place Premier League finish is not their best, but surely their most remarkable one.
On the last day, they defeated a stubborn Sheffield United 3-1 to give a good account of their progress.
Hasenhuttl was pleased with Southampton’s end of season standing, especially the journey they took to get there.
The Austrian manager was pleased with their result against the Blades and highlighted the improvements they have made.
“It’s not only hope but also a confidence that what we are doing is the right thing, especially with the ball,” Football 365 reported Hasenhuttl. “I saw today a team who was really patient and waiting for the right moment.”
“The second half was a fantastic performance against deep defending.”
“We deserved to win 3-1. It can even be higher normally.”
“It’s not easy to create that many chances against such a good defence.”
“I don’t think they conceded a lot of goals this season, so with the ball, it was one of our best performances this season.”
“It’s amazing, especially after lockdown. What we did was unbelievable.”
