Ilkay Gundogan has warned everyone of Kai Havertz’s quality by suggesting the Chelsea target is better than German legend Michael Ballack.
Kai Havertz is one of Germany’s great hopes for the future and already tipped as a potential Ballon d’Or winner. Therefore, Chelsea are hot on his trail this summer.
While Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Liverpool have all reportedly expressed an interest, the Blues are firm favorites to sign him. Talks are allegedly at an advanced stage for a €70m deal plus add-ons.
Should Chelsea pull this one off, it will be their second coup from Germany following Timo Werner’s €53m arrival from RB Leipzig. Seeing the pair alongside fellow new signing Hakim Ziyech next season would be a tantalizing prospect.
But Gundogan, who has played alongside Havertz for the German national team three times, is fully aware of the 21-year-old’s prestigious talents and claims he’s better than even former Blues star Ballack.
“In my opinion, Havertz is even better than Ballack in terms of his playing ability. Ballack had a certain level of aggression in his game, and a strong mentality,” Gundogan told Bild.
“He was a top player of the previous generation – a bastard on the pitch, in a positive sense. Kai isn’t like that.”
That’s quite a statement from Gundogan considering all Ballack achieved. Aside from being one of the greatest talents of his generation, the former midfielder won many top honors including three Bundesliga titles and the Premier League.
He also famously inspired Germany to the 2002 World Cup final and again helped them reach another final in Euro 2008.
