Eric Abidal suggests it will not be easy for Barcelona to work on a contract renewal for Lionel Messi.

Lionel Messi is tied to FC Barcelona until 2021. And with the end of his contract fast approaching, the club is hoping he pens down a new deal.

Ever since his recent bust-up with Eric Abidal, Messi has been linked with a move away from the Camp Nou in the summer. A reunion with Pep Guardiola looks to be the most likely event as Manchester City are reported to be the front runners to sign Messi in the summer.

Speaking about the speculation, however, Pep Guardiola recently dismissed such claims. The Man City boss said that he wishes Messi to stay at Barca till the end of his career.

But Eric Abidal is unsure whether the Argentine will commit his future to Barcelona. Abidal also hailed Messi as the best player in the world.

“The question is for him. Hopefully, he continues,” Abidal told Mundo Deportivo.

“Leo has said that Barca is everything for him, that he wants to stay here, there are conditions from there. We are talking about the best player in the world and having a renewal with such a player is never easy.”
