Rafael van der Vaart has launched a blistering assessment of world record transfer fee defender Harry Maguire.
The former Dutch international, who is now retired from football, has not only questioned the value of Maguire, but also his ability.
Van der Vaart has had spells, at Ajax, Real Madrid, and Tottenham in an 18-year top-flight career that saw him play for seven different clubs.
He believes that is fellow countryman Virgil van Dijk is without a doubt far superior to Maguire, and that the Englishman is in fact nothing special at all.
In an interview with Ziggo Sport, he expressed his scathing opinion of the new Manchester United man.
“When I watch an amateur game on Sunday, I find three players playing like him [Maguire]. I’m serious.”
“It may sound silly, but he will not hear it anyway.”
“After all, we’re talking about a €90 million transfer here. Then [Virgil] van Dijk is worth €300 million.”
Van der Vaart has a history of being unimpressed by Maguire.
“It’s funny because, during the Nations League, I was doing work for Dutch television, I remember we were saying ‘Harry Maguire was by far the worst player on the pitch.”
“Then, two months later, €90m.”
Van der Vaart’s words won’t go down well with England and United fans alike.
Maguire has a cult following as an England player and has developed a similar one at United in the short time he has been there.
While Maguire’s team have been struggling of late, it is safe to say he has been impressive so far at United.
Without Maguire both the Red Devils and the Three Lions would be worse off that is for sure.
