Odion Ighalo is jubilant to have extended his stay at Manchester United while once again expressing his pleasure on playing at the club.
Manchester United feared not being able to utilize Odion Ighalo when the Premier League returns for he was set to return to his parent club Shanghai Shenhua in early June.
The winter loan signing, who came in committing to a six-month-long deal, featured just eight times this season but it was enough to convince Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of his abilities.
Man United, as a result, were reportedly keen on signing him on a permanent transfer. But any approach from their side was forced to get delayed due to the coronavirus crisis.
The Red Devils then faced an even greater threat of losing the Nigeria international even before the resumption of the Premier League as his initial contract was to expire at the end of May.
Eventually, Ighalo’s parent club Shanghai Shenhua agreed to extend his stay at Old Trafford by eight months.
Ighalo recently admitted that he was losing his sleep over quitting the club sooner than expected. But since things are settled now, he is enjoying every moment at his ‘dream’ club.
“I was very worried it [his loan extension] wasn’t going to happen,” he said in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports.
“But I want to thank them [Shanghai Shenhua] for agreeing to my wish to stay at Manchester United. I want to thank the manager Ole for pushing as well.
“This is a great achievement for me to be at this club and I will never take it for granted. It is happening towards the last stage of my football career, which makes me feel even happier. That’s why I cherish every moment of being at this club.”
