Ciro Immobile still finds the idea of him beating Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to the European Golden Shoe as ‘crazy’ and defended how he won it.
36 goals in 37 games not only saw Immobile equal Gonzalo Higuain’s record for the most goals in a Serie A season, but won him a maiden European Golden Shoe prize for his efforts.
The Italian striker leapfrogged Robert Lewandowski by ending the season with seven goals in his last five league games. He finished four points clear at the top of the table.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, finished five goals and 10 points behind Immobile in third, with Lionel Messi a further 11 goals and 22 points back in fifth.
“It’s crazy, me in front of Ronaldo and Lewandowski,” Immobile told Corriere dello Sport.
“If I reread the roll of honor, I almost don’t believe it: Messi, Messi, (Luis) Suarez, Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Messi, Messi, Ronaldo, Messi.

“I interrupted the Leo-Cristiano duet. For this I thanked the team, it was the least I could do.”
While critics often pointed out that Ronaldo scored 12 penalties this season, Immobile scored 14 in comparison. Lewandowski and Messi, on the other hand, scored from the 12-yard mark just five times.
When asked if he had any regrets about taking so many spot-kicks, though, Immobile replied: “None. I did what had to be done.
“If I hadn’t behaved like this I wouldn’t have reached the record figure. The locker room, its equilibrium is the most important thing.
“They are very thin threads and they must never be broken.”
