The Italy international inspired his side to a 3-0 victory over Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Roma’s hero Stephan El Shaarawy was more than happy after the Giallorossi’s European glory as he thinks that was “the kind of night you never forget”.
Even though Eusebio Di Francesco’s squad recorded a thrilling 3-3 at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago, they completely smashed Chelsea in the second game between the two sides in Group C, replacing the Premier League champions at the top of the standings in Europe.
El Shaarawy scored twice, inspiring his team to a convincing victory over Conte’s side. Speaking to the club’s website, the Italian expressed his delight with both the performance and the result: “It’s the kind of night that you never forget, for the rest of your life,”
“This is a special night – it was my first brace in the Champions League, plus beating Chelsea 3-0 doesn’t happen every day. This win means a lot to us.
“It means a great deal [to go top of the group]. When the draw was made, there was some doubt surrounding us.”
However, El Shaarawy does not want to get carried away in celebrations as he insists his team should now focus on their next game against Fiorentina in the Italian top-flight: “But we went to London and played a really good game, at a tough ground. Now we have an important game before the international break [at Fiorentina in Serie A]. We’re purely focused on that.”
