Andreas Brehme has boldly claimed Manchester United are inferior to Inter and Leverkusen, making them only third-best in the Europa League.
Manchester United are widely considered favorites to win the Europa League this month, with bookmakers and various media outlet tipping them.
Should they succeed, it will be their first piece of major silverware at Old Trafford since 2017.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side proved their credentials with convincing aggregate victories against Club Brugge (6-1) and LASK (7-1) in the knockout stages. FC Copenhagen now await them in the quarter-finals.
Should things go their way in Germany tonight, United will meet either Wolves or Sevilla in the last four. Then Inter Milan are likely to meet them in the final.
But Brehme doesn’t believe the Red Devils can beat his old club in the final. He even suggested tonight’s opponents Bayer Leverkusen are more formidable foes for Antonio Conte’s men.
“I have no doubt, for me it’s Inter,” the German World Cup winner told Gazzetta dello Sport.
“The Nerazzurri are a great team, although Bayer Leverkusen are strong and have an excellent forward like Havertz, but Conte’s squad takes the lead.
“I’d say, whoever wins this game has a great chance of raising the Europa League [trophy]. The semi-final against either Shakhtar Donetsk or Basel is winnable.
“On the other side of the bracket, I think Manchester United will qualify for the finals. But both Inter and Bayer are stronger than the English club.”
Brehme made 155 appearances between 1988 and 1992 for Inter, winning one UEFA Cup and Serie A title.
