Antonio Conte sent out his strongest side to take on the challenge of La Liga upstarts Getafe in their Europa League Round of 16 encounter.
Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez started for the Nerazzurri as Conte made Europa League a priority.
The Nerazzurri equally shared possession with the Spanish side but were the first one to break the deadlock. It was Lukaku’s awareness that gave Inter the lead.
Alessandro Bastoni’s clever upfield ball that gave the Belgian the chance. Lukaku carried the ball forward and muscled the Getafe defender off before sending a powerful shot from the left side. The keeper was as helpless as the defender before him as the ball hit the back of the net.
Following the goal, both sides attacked each other but without much success. But Inter made the result beyond doubt seven minutes from time.
Cristian Eriksen broke forward and received the ball deep. He passed it on to the rushing Danilo D’Ambrosio, whose attempted ball into the area was cleared to the rushing Dane. Eriksen did not miss from close range, his volley making it his fourth goal in 22 competitive outings.
Getafe were left ruing their mistakes and inability to make anything out of their five corner chances as well as a greater number of shots on target. Jorge Molina could have equalized before Eriksen’s goal but sent his shot wide from 12 yards out.
Inter Milan move forward and will take on the winner of Rangers and Bayer Leverkusen fixture.
Leverkusen have the upper hand but have not played competitively in over a month. On the other hand, Rangers kickstarted their Scottish Premiership title challenge with a tough 0-1 away win over Aberdeen.
