It has been a difficult period for Arsenal and their supporters of late, and with Granit Xhaka losing his captaincy for his exit against Crystal Palace; Unai Emery has officially announced Pierre-Emerick Auybameyang will be Arsenal’s next permanent captain.
Xhaka’s actions caused uproar amongst the Arsenal faithful, as the Swiss international refused to hurry off the field when his team were chasing the game against Crystal Palace. After dropping more points in the early stages of the season, football betting indicates Arsenal are currently outsiders to finish in the top four with odds of 9/4.
Aubameyang was Arsenal’s vice-captain and the Gabonese striker led the team out with the armband against Wolves in the Premier League, which did, in fact, indicate Emery would be happy to pass on the responsibility to his star striker. But is Aubameyang captain material? There is no doubting his ability for the Gunners, but it is a ploy to try and prevent him from leaving further down the line? It’s hard to tell. He’s arguably Arsenal’s key asset, but his job is to score goals and the role of the captain could interfere with his main duties.
