Jose Mourinho had a very public falling out with Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas, but it appears that years later the pair have made amends.
Iker Casillas today announced his retirement from football. The goalkeeper is a legend of the sport and especially at Real Madrid.
However, it was back in the reign of Jose Mourinho at the Santiago Bernabeu that there was a very public falling out between the pair and since then a soured relationship.
Mourinho was never one to shy away from controversy-laden decisions. So to replace the shot-stopper for a couple of games in what he sighted as “tactical reasons” was nothing out of the ordinary.
However, this resulted in a frosty relationship, to say the least between arguably two of the best in the business at what they respectively.
The rift between the pair was considered irreconcilable and has lasted literally for years.
It turns out though that after all this time the pair have apparently made up, with the “Special One” admitting it may have taken some time but he has nothing but admiration for the “great” Casillas.
Speaking to AS, he said:
“His intelligence and maturity have made us always respect each other and years later we have even been able to cultivate an honest friendship.”
“He is a historic goalkeeper for Real Madrid, La Roja, and world football,” Mourinho continued. “With him, I won La Liga and with him, I had difficult moments due to my professional and never personal decision to play another player.”
“Great goalkeeper and a great man”.
