Ivan Perisic has opened up on his failed transfer to Manchester United two years ago, which is something he still bitterly regrets to this day.
Perisic became a top target for Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2017 as the United boss wanted a winger capable of setting up new signing Romelu Lukaku on a regular basis at Old Trafford.
While the Red Devils did make an offer, Perisic ultimately stayed put at Inter Milan. He was then the subject of renewed interest last year before Mourinho’s time in Manchester ended in December.
And Perisic has since returned to the Bundesliga, where he previously starred for Borussia Dortmund and VfL Wolfsburg, to join Bayern Munich on a season-long loan agreement.
But now the Croatia international admits that a United move was “very close” to happening at one point.
“How close was I going there? Very close,” he told The Athletic
“It was an amazing thing for me when Jose called me. It was difficult to say no to him.
“In fact, I really, really wanted to join him and play for United.
“It was a dream of mine to play in all the big leagues. But it didn’t happen. It was painful for me. But I don’t want to go into the details.
“I only found out, myself, the real reasons two years later.”
Regardless, Perisic has got off to a solid start in his Bayern career by managing two goals and assists in his first four appearances.
Should he keep this up, the Bundesliga champions will surely sign him up on a permanent deal at the end of the season.
