According to a report from Diario Sport, there is a contract clause that could allow Juan Mata to leave Manchester United for FC Barcelona.

Reports from several news outlets in Spain and England have been talking about Juan Mata’s possibilities of leaving Manchester United, his most likely destination is FC Barcelona but there are several details that we need to consider from this imminent negotiation.

Juan Mata as we all know, is soon to be 31-years of age and he is already considered a veteran amongst his peers in the Red Devils.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently revealed that he would like the Spaniard to stay but there are sources who are very close to the technical staff that disagrees, this is the case with former Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant manager, Rene Meulensteen.

The ex-right hand of the mythical Scottish manager loves Juan Mata, but he revealed that he may not be Solskjaer’s cup of tea for the squad and he may leave the club soon in order to “refresh” that position in the squad: “Ole obviously had a good look at the squad and he wants to play with a lot of energy and a lot of pace,” said Rene on 888sport.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of Mata and think he’s a great player but it just might be that Mata doesn’t fit in the picture that Ole sees.”

“That is obvious otherwise he would have played more often and at some point you have to refresh your squad in certain areas.”

After knowing this information that hits very close to home, all we had to do is investigate the situation further in order to find some more revealing details about the possibility of Juan Mata actually leaving Manchester United.

Turns out that the Red Devils have a contract clause on every player when he first arrives, that allows them to automatically renew their agreement exactly one year after they have been in the club but that only happens once for every player and Mata has already extended his contract once.

This means that the Spaniard has been free to negotiate with any club of his choosing since January 1st, which means that he can easily go to FC Barcelona and talk about the possibility of moving to the Catalan club where he can finish his career in style.

The type of midfielder Juan Mata is fits perfectly with Barcelona’s philosophy, which means that signing the player would be a no-brainer for the Catalan club but there are other things to consider here.

Top 5 things to look out for in the Premier League this weekend

This weekend's Premier League games have plenty to offer

The player’s wage should be no problem as he currently earns a reported €6 million per season at Manchester United, a salary that the club has no problem covering.

This is where Diario Sport’s report from this Thursday becomes relevant, as Juan Mata has spoken to his agent and revealed that his options are to either strike a contract renewal with Manchester United or ultimately decide to continue his career at FC Barcelona.

The Spaniard loves playing in English football, but the idea of playing for one of the best clubs in the world alongside Lionel Messi is also very seducing to him.

If Juan doesn’t see Manchester United moving forward with his contract extension, he has already delivered specific instructions to his agent so they can reach an agreement with the Catalan club that can suit all parties involved in the negotiation.

Given that the winter transfer window is about to close, this deal would have to be completed next summer and Juan Mata has no problem waiting for it to cook slowly.

Barcelona would very much like to have one of the best Spanish midfielders in recent history playing his final best years with the Catalan club, his free-agent status and his wage would speed up the operation without a problem.

All Barcelona needs to do is hope that Manchester United doesn’t decide to extend his contract, but judging by Meulensteen’s statements this is very unlikely.
