Julen Lopetegui’s obsession with Hector Herrera

Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui has a very good impression of Mexican midfielder Hector Herrera, he desperately wants to sign him.

Back when Julen Lopetegui managed FC Porto from Portugal, he had a very close relationship and a great experience with Mexican midfielder Hector Herrera. Portuguese journal ‘A Bola’ just revealed that the Real Madrid boss just met in an undisclosed hotel with the player, to express his desire to sign him for the club either during the winter transfer window by paying his clause, or next summer for free. The Mexican midfielder decided to not extend his contract with the Portuguese champions when they offered him a renovation, his intention is to end his current commitment with the club and then move to a bigger club where he can finish his career in Europe in the best way possible before either returning to Mexico or give the MLS a chance. Hector Herrera is widely regarded in Mexico as the best midfielder right now, and also one of the best Mexican players in the world. The former Pachuca player’s performances in the World Cup against South Korea but most of all Germany, was more than enough reason to turn the heads from some of the biggest clubs in European football.

But according to ‘A Bola’, Lopetegui has the advantage over the player due to their previous relationship when both were in the club. But the possible negotiation could turn complicated because Porto considers him one of their most important players, he is the club’s skipper. The price tag on him is €45 million, but Florentino Perez doesn’t want to pay that much money for a player who already turned 29 and has never played in a top club during his career. In fact, Porto is the only club where Hector Herrera has developed his European career because he’s always been happy there. However, Lopetegui’s call and the chance to be included in the select group of Mexican players who played for Los Blancos, might be the main reason why this could actually become a reality. If the Real Madrid president decides that paying that fee is not possible, Lopetegui would even be willing to wait for next summer when Herrera can come for free which would be a far better deal regardless of the player’s age. We also have to keep in mind that this Mexican player wasn’t on the wishlist for Florentino, he is a special request from Lopetegui and he is determined to get him according to ‘A Bola’.

Herrera could join a select group of Mexicans.

If this report turns out to be true, Hector Herrera could effectively become the fifth Mexican footballer to wear Real Madrid’s uniform in history. The first one who had this honor was way back in 1912, his name was Jose Ramon Sauto and played for Los Blancos for 11 years. After Sauto there was Jose Luis Borbolla who only played two matches between 1944 and 1946. Then came the most illustrious Mexican who wore the Real Madrid shirt, Hugo Sanchez who is still one of the club’s most revered strikers in history. Finally we have ‘Chicharito’, who played only for one season between 2013 and 2014, where he got to score 9 goals during his time under manager Carlos Ancelotti. Herrera would have very big shoes to fill when compared to Hugo Sanchez, but he has the skills to make his own story and also succeed with Los Blancos if Lopetegui gets what he wants from Florentino Perez. It is still early to know if this deal will go forward at all, but Julen wants this specific player to fill the void that Mateo Kovacic left and add more talent to the already great midfield where world-class players like Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Casemiro already play.
