The 38-year-old believes that Neymar would have already won the Ballon d’Or if it had not been for Lionel Messi.

Julio Cesar shared he had a high opinion of Neymar, but admitted Messi is just on a level of his own.

The Brazilian came third in the FIFA Men’s Best Player awards this year, behind second-placed Lionel Messi and winner Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Cesar expects the Paris Saint-Germain star to claim the award for the best player in the world in the near future.

Despite all the controversy around his behaviour, there is no doubt Neymar has been performing great for his new club in the French capital. He has 11 goals in 12 games so far, but he is still behind his old team-mate Messi, who has 16 goals in 17 games.

Speaking to ESPN on the matter, Cesar stated: “For me, Neymar is the best player in the world today… Messi? I said the world; Messi is from another planet! But I think this is Neymar’s moment now.

“The whole world is following him and seeing how he does, even people who don’t follow football are interested in Neymar

“They admire him, not only for what he does on the pitch but for how he carries himself off it. I’ve got a lot of respect for Neymar and I’ve had the pleasure of playing with him, of winning with him and, like a friend, I wish him all the best to win the Ballon d’Or.”
