According to the Liverpool boss, the Dutch footballer has had a great season in all the competitions the Reds are playing.
Netherlands national team footballer Virgil van Dijk has been earning a lot of praise this season in the English Premier League.
His 2018-2019 season performance has been amazing, and for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp he deserves to win the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year Award.
“Would I feel sad if Van Dijk doesn’t win Player of the Year? For him yes, of course,” he told reporters according to Reuters.
“He’s had an outstanding season. Will he have deserved it? Of course. It was last season when (Manchester City’s) Kevin De Bruyne and (Liverpool’s) Mo Salah both played unbelievable seasons and Mo won it.”
Van Dijk is competing along with teammate Sadio Mane, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, and three players from Manchester City: Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, and Bernardo Silva.
“We were happy about that and not because De Bruyne lost it, because he would have deserved it as well. I think it is the same again in this case,” he concluded.
The winner for the PFA award will be announced on April 28.
Van Dijk joined Liverpool this summer, after playing in Southampton for three years. Before that, he played two seasons for Celtic in the Scottish Premier League, and two years with Groningen in his native Netherlands.
