Jurgen Klopp feels it would have been difficult for Virgil van Dijk to show his talent without Dejan Lovren.
Liverpool’s defenders are as good as their attackers going forward, and their victory against Brighton is a testament to that. Center back Virgil van Dijk scored two headers, both of which were set up by fullback Trent Alexander-Arnold, in the 2-1 win.
After the match, as reported by Independent, Jurgen Klopp praised his number-4 for his performance. But the German insisted that despite Van Dijk’s talent, he couldn’t have scored without Dejan Lovren staying back to cover for him.
“Oh come on, do we have to talk about individual players?” Jurgen Klopp said when asked about Virgil van Dijk.
“He scored two goals, that’s the story itself. He’s good, really good, outstandingly good. But he has to be, he’s a very talented boy. So he just has to use that talent and it would be a shame if he doesn’t.
“So yes, incredibly important but if Virg plays the last line alone it would be pretty difficult. I think Dejan Lovren, who maybe doesn’t have the headlines like this, but what he’s playing since, he has all my respect, to be honest,” the Liverpool manager assured.
