Man City legend Vincent Kompany has named Liverpool star Virgil Van Dijk as the best defender in Premier League’s history.
Vincent Kompany is no doubt one of the greatest defenders in Premier League history.
During his time at Manchester City, his astute displays for the club saw them dominate the country domestically.
Kompany won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups during a trophy-laden 11-year spell at Manchester City.
Another player already seeing his stock rise in that category is Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk.
The former Southampton man has been credited with transforming the Reds backline since he joined in 2018. Testament to that is the fact that Liverpool are closing in on their first league title in over 30 years.
And in a league that has seen the likes of John Terry, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand to mention a few, Kompany took to name Van Dijk as the best ever in the competition.
“I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk,” the Belgian told Sporf.
“And it’s a weird one because he hasn’t been on the scene for as long as these names we mentioned, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, these guys were there for a long, long time.
“But the signs he showed in his last few years just make it so obvious that if he would’ve been at the top, top level before that, he would’ve been already further as well.
“And from what I’ve seen in terms of having an impact on the team, and a defender is never about himself, it’s about his communication with other guys and how you make your team more solid.
“And the Liverpool before Van Dijk and the one after him, it’s a completely different setup, and I’ll give him that one because of that.”
Another City top name in Sergio Aguero also hailed Van Dijk recently as one of the best in the world.
