Kylian Mbappe admits “revenge” is on everybody’s minds ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s Trophee des Champions clash with Rennes.
Mbappe and PSG will meet Rennes on Saturday in China for the first time since the Coupe de France final in April, which saw Julien Stephan’s men end their four-year dominance of the competition by beating them in Paris.
Brazilian duo Dani Alves and Neymar had put the French champions ahead before Presnel Kimpembe’s own goal and Mexer’s header level things at 2-2. Therefore, the final went into a penalty shoot-out, which Rennes won 6-5.
But for Mbappe, in particular, the final is still undoubtedly a sore spot after he was sent-off during extra-time for a terrible challenge on Da Silva.
When asked if revenge is on his mind for this weekend, Mbappe told the club’s website: “We will have a little feeling of revenge, I think.
“This is the start of a new season and that loss in the final really hurt. But above all, this is the start of a new campaign and we will give everything we have to try and win the first trophy.”
PSG have spent €82m this summer in signing Everton star Idrissa Gueye, Abdou Diallo of Borussia Dortmund, and Sevilla’s Pablo Sarabia.
While Ajax U-21 defender Mitchel Bakker, Chelsea U-23 goalkeeper Marcin Bulka and Ander Herrera from Manchester United have all arrived at the Parc Des Princes on free transfers.
“One of our aims is to make sure the new players settle in well and feel at home so that they can give their best on the pitch for the team,” said Mbappe on the new recruits.
“That’s the best solution for everyone. It’s very important, and I think everything will be fine with the new guys, everyone likes them and that’s a good starting point!”
The PSG and Rennes Trophee des Champions clash will take place in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. Kick-off will begin at 13:30 (CET) on Saturday.
