Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot insists Frank Lampard has done a great job for the club in his first season as Blues manager.
Frank Lampard faced questions over his managerial credentials after his Chelsea side lost the FA Cup final.
The Blues surrendered a 1-0 lead and eventually lost at the hands of Arsenal.
That loss brought to light a bad statistic for Frank Lampard. It meant the English manager has now lost three finals in the space of a year (Championship playoffs, UEFA Super Cup and the FA Cup).
Another set have come up with excuses for Lampard, considering the Blues lost Eden Hazard and were also hit with a transfer embargo last summer.
But former Blues defender Melchiot has told the Chelsea boss to ignore the critics. Melchiot insists Lampard has worked wonders to get the Blues to a cup final and secure Champions League football for 2020/21.
“It’s been a great season,” he told the talkSPORT Breakfast.
“Don’t get me wrong, of course you’re going to have people say we should have won it, but that’s not the case.”
“But if you look back, Frank started by taking over a club that had a [transfer] ban, and he had two young boys coming into the team, you have to understand that they didn’t have that much time to readjust.”
“He’s got the team to the final of the FA Cup and also made sure they qualify for the Champions League.”
“Those kind of things are crucial and I have to compliment them on that.”
