Lampard warned “not to end up like Arsenal and only buy strikers”

Paul Merson has warned Frank Lampard to not end up like Arsenal and neglect to spend on his defensive frailties.

Frank Lampard has apparently been given a sizeable war chest from Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich this summer. The Stamford Bridge boss will have very clear instructions. There is obviously money to spend but in return, the team should be challenging for top honors.

Lampard has already spent around 100 million Euros on Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. He is heavily linked with a 90 million Euro deal to bring in Kai Havertz.

These are all wonderful signings that will no doubt excite the fans and encourage attacking football.

However, Chelsea has not exactly been what you would consider watertight at the back this season.

Granted the world’s most expensive goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has been out of sorts, but their defense has been questionable at best.

Arsenal legend Paul Merson fears Lampard will make the same mistakes as his old club did, running out of money before they could make the necessary defensive acquisitions.

Speaking to Sky Sports Merson has some advice for the Chelsea boss.

He said:

“Their priority has to be getting a center-half and a left-back. 100 percent.”

“It tells you everything that they have to play three at the back, Frank Lampard doesn’t trust the center-backs.”

“They’ve bought well so far upfront, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech are major signings, but don’t end up like Arsenal.”

“Where everyone is crying out and can see what they need. How many years did we say Arsene Wenger needs a center-half, but he never went and got one?”
