Jamaal Lascelles has been named as Newcastle United’s Player of the Year for the 2017/18 season
The English defender has been one of the club’s top performers this season and has been credited as one of the big reasons to Newcastle’s recent upturn in form with Chelsea rumoured to have been interested in signing him for this summer.
England boss Gareth Southgate had been urged to give Lascelles a chance before naming his final 23-man squad for this summer’s World Cup after the 24-year-old continually impressed in the Premier League as Newcastle secured a top 10 finish on their return to the top flight.
Lascelles made key contributions for the Magpies in their games against Swansea City and Stoke City in September and his absence at the beginning of the winter period was very notable with Newcastle only being able to achieve a single point in his six weeks away from the squad.
He now joins former greats Alan Shearer, Shay Given and Kevin Keegan to have won the award.
