Lautaro Martinez has suggested that Lionel Messi is as important to the Argentina team as Maradona was during his time.
Lautaro Martinez has been in blistering form for Inter this season. The 22-year old has scored 13 goals so far in all competitions and looks to be a perfect strike partner for Romelu Lukaku.
The striker’s form has made him a transfer target for a number of clubs with Barcelona seeming to be the most rumored destination.
Amid the transfer talk, Lautaro Martinez has heaped praised on his countrymen Lionel Messi. Martinez insisted that Messi is unparalleled in his involvement for the national team.
The Inter number-10 also expressed his desire to win the World Cup with Argentina while highlighting his country’s past failures in being able to clinch the much-awaited trophy.
“For us Argentines, Leo is as important as Maradona was,” he told La Repubblica.
“It’s something that goes beyond football. He is the best in the world; playing with him in the national team is a privilege.
“He is generous; he shows me his movements, he teaches me to find spaces that apparently do not exist,” Lautaro Martinez added.
“[Winning the World Cup with Messi] would be wonderful. He got very close to it. He has come close to the Copa America, playing three finals. Messi as world champion, together with his team-mates, would be a great thing for all Argentina.”
