Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez scored a beautiful winning goal against Atletico Madrid this Saturday, proving that he is one of Europe’s most exciting new arrivals.

This Saturday there was a very interesting match between Atletico Madrid and Internazionale Milano for the International Champions Cup, a match in which the standout player was none other than young Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez. The former Racing player who arrived in Italy this summer to reinforce the Italian giants, was the most important player of this match that ended in a 1-0 victory for the Nerazzurri and it also served as a perfect presentation for him as one of Europe’s most exciting new arrivals for the season that is about to begin. We had watched Lautaro scoring good goals throughout the preseason already, but today’s match against Atletico was his first serious test and he passed it with flying colors thanks to a wonderful finish.

Similarities with Sergio Agüero and Romario.

To those who wonder about things such as a player’s style or rhythm, Lautaro Martinez’s pace can be compared to two players who come to mind. Since he first started playing in the Argentinean league for Racing Club, Lautaro Martinez showed from an early age that he has qualities that are very similar to those of his compatriot and Manchester City all-time goal scorer Sergio Agüero. Both players share many similarities when it comes to finishing, ball control, speed, pace, and overall ability to find spaces inside the box. Although we are aware that it’s too soon to compare Lautaro with any player’s career in Europe, we can compare his qualities as a player to other footballers that we have seen throughout history. ‘Kun’ is the most familiar compatriot that we can compare Lautaro with.

However, if we look for another player who has similarities with today’s match MVP from the Atletico vs Inter match, the one that comes to mind is Brazilian legend Romario. Lautaro’s skill to get past players with simple flicks is very reminiscent to those of Romario when he played for Barcelona back in the nineties. The young striker has even attempted many similar skills that Romario once performed during his prime, in which he managed to get past defenders after receiving the ball from complicated angles that could help his dribbling skills. Lautaro reunites all the qualities that some of the best Argentine strikers have with that natural ability to run really fast in short spaces with the ball at his feet, plus his finishing skills are looking quite polished from just looking at the goal he scored today against Atletico.

Lautaro’s Champions League debut.

As we are slightly over a month from a brand new Champions League season start, Internazionale Milano returns to the competition for the first time in the past six years. The last time the Italian club qualified to the competition was way back in the 2011-2012 tournament and since then, they disappeared almost completely from the map until this season. The squad they have to compete for the trophy this year is very competitive, but we still have to wait and see if they have what it takes to reach the further stages of the most competitive football tournament in the world. Lautaro Martinez is perhaps the best addition to the squad, who will attempt to take the glory by forming a frightening duo with his compatriot and Inter star Mauro Icardi. If the young striker does well this season, we can expect him to get a call-up for the upcoming friendlies that Argentina will play before the end of 2018.
