Lazio had the chance to leapfrog Inter Milan and claim second place in Serie A, but a scoreless draw with Hellas Verona has left them stuck in third.

It was a game that Lazio should have won with ease against mid-table, Verona. The phenomenal goal-scoring of Ciro Immobile appeared to have escaped them tonight.

With Inter drawing three of their last four league games the gap between second and third was down to a mere two points before tonight game.

It was a chance for Lazio to leapfrog Conte’s Inter a claim second place themselves. In fact, they would have only been three points of league leaders Juventus too.

Both sides were in search of club milestones.

Lazio was one game away from matching their all-time unbeaten run record of 17 matches.

While Verona was looking to avoid defeat to make it seven unbeaten Serie A games in a row for the first time in 20 years.

Both got their records, but the result was far from what they really wanted.

It was a closely fought affair, with Lazio barely edging possession with 53%.

Both sides had plenty of shots, 18 for Lazio and 14 for Verona. But they lacked real quality, as of those shots, only four and three respectively were on target.

Luis Alberto hit the woodwork twice for Lazio, but it quite simply was not their night to score.

Verona will be the happier of the two sides.
