Oliver Mintzlaff is fairly certain that RB Leipzig will see to it that Dayot Upamecano does not quit the club on a free transfer the next year.
Dayot Upamecano’s lack of urgency to sign a new contract despite nearing the final year of his current one has put RB Leipzig in a difficult situation.
Upamecano has been linked with a number of clubs due to his impressive form in the 2019/20 Bundesliga season, with Arsenal rumored to be the most interested party.
The center-back has a release clause of around €60 million on his contract. But it is unlikely that any club will be willing to activate it due to the recent financial crisis.
Leipzig, as a result, might be forced to cash in on him this summer for a lower amount or risk losing him entirely for free when his contract expires next year.
However, CEO Oliver Mintzlaff remains positive that Upamecano will be playing at the Red Bull Arena next season.
“I assume that he will also play for us next season. We are in good talks to find a solution to prevent him from leaving on a free transfer next year,” Mintzlaff told Kicker [via Mirror].
“It worked out with Timo Werner. And I assume that we will do our homework with regard to Dayot as well.”
