Manchester City may have received an untimely blow as an injured Leroy Sane hobbled off in the opening ten minutes of Sunday’s Community Shield.
Head coach Pep Guardiola surprisingly selected Sane in his line-up for City’s showdown against Liverpool at Wembley.
The Catalan’s decision to start the Germany international came amid reports that he will join Bayern Munich. Apparently, local media outlets have claimed Sane wouldn’t play in the Community Shield to avoid injury.
Although the winger has been in good form in pre-season and scored four goals in his last five league meetings with Liverpool. Therefore, Guardiola decided to take a chance on him.
Sane started up front alongside Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling in a 4-3-3 formation. On the other hand, Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus occupied bench roles following their late returns from Copa America duty.
But MEN revealed that the 23-year-old lasted just 10 minutes into the game following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s foul. It states that the contact with the Liverpool right-back forced Sane to land awkwardly on his right knee.
Despite the City medical team giving him treatment, however, Sane was unable to continue. Therefore, Guardiola replaced him with Gabriel Jesus.
Currently, it’s unknown how serious the former Schalke 04 man’s injury is. But it could potentially rule out a transfer to Bayern and cost City a key player for the start of this season.
At the moment, the Premier League champions hold a slender 1-0 lead over Liverpool at Wembley at half-time following Raheem Sterling’s 12th-minute goal.
