Joleon Lescott believes Manchester City can remain Champions League favorites so long as they don’t underestimate Karim Benzema.

Manchester City goes into their Champions League round of 16-second leg with a two-one lead over Real Madrid.

Not only are they winning the tie on aggregate, but they also have the all-important away goal.

However, few would bet against Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are so experienced in the competition and have such resources at their disposal they can never be written off.

Former City defender Joleon Lescott believes the biggest threat comes from Karim Benzema.

He is confident his old side can progress and even have the ability to win the whole thing. Speaking to Football Index, he said:

“Sergio Ramos is going to be a big miss for Real Madrid and they could look back on his red card as the defining moment in these games.”

“Eden Hazard might well be back.”

“But Benzema is still Real Madrid’s biggest threat. I don’t think Benzema gets enough credit for the number of goals he has scored consistently over a long period of time for the club.”

“Real Madrid has a lot of talent and accomplished world stars throughout their team, but Manchester City is more than a match for them.”

“No-one will want to face Manchester City in the Champions League and that’s a big compliment for any team in an elite competition.”

“I see Manchester City beating Real Madrid again and progressing to the next round of the Champions League.”

Why not take a look at the odds as they stand on winning the Champions League?
